This is a guess paper for 9th class English for the Punjab boards, made by Muhammad Qadir Rafique of Al-Qadeer Jinnah Science Academy for the 2024 annual exams. It is the longest guess paper in our 9th class set, and unlike most guess papers it gives the answers for the whole objective part, so you can check yourself as you go.

2027 update: we will update this guess paper for the 2027 annual exams a few days before the exams start. Until then, the 2024 edition below is the latest one we have for 9th class English.

The objective part: about 800 MCQs with answers

After the cover, the first 36 pages of the 48 are MCQs, each with the right option ticked. They come in four sets:

  • Correct spelling, about 200 words such as “experiment”, “counseling”, “environment” and “magnificent”, each with three wrong spellings beside it.
  • Synonyms and word meanings, 175 questions on underlined words from the lessons, for example “vigour”, “manifold”, “dormant” and “panorama”.
  • Grammar MCQs, more than 250, on parts of speech, degrees of adjectives, infinitives, conditional sentences and simple, compound and complex sentences.
  • Tenses, 168 fill-in-the-blank questions, from “They … all night” (will travel) to “I … writing this letter by June next year” (shall have finished).

The subjective part, question by question

The last 12 pages follow the order of the board paper. Questions the teacher thinks are most likely are marked “زیادہ اہم” (most important).

  • Q1, translation into Urdu: 40 paragraphs from the lessons, on Arabia and the Holy Prophet ﷺ, patriotism, drug addiction, noise pollution and Helen Keller’s “Three Days to See”.
  • Q2, short questions: 35 questions on the lessons, such as “Why was the Holy Quran sent in Arabic?”, “What was Quaid’s concept of our nation?”, “Why is Sultan Ahmed Mosque also known as the Blue Mosque?” and “What are the causes of drug addiction?”.
  • Q3, poem summaries: “Daffodils” and “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening”.
  • Q4, words and idioms to use in sentences: about 50, including “to keep an eye”, “fall a prey”, “bits and pieces” and “global village”.
  • Q5, stories or letter: three moral stories (A Foolish Slave, A Friend in Need is a Friend Indeed, Haste Makes Waste), or a model letter with a ready-made opening and closing, plus short middle paragraphs for 13 common letter topics.
  • Q6, comprehension: unseen passages with five questions each, on topics like newspapers, pottery, early rising and Allama Iqbal.
  • Q7, active and passive voice: more than 50 sentences, already changed into the passive.
  • Q8, translation from Urdu into English: 100 short Urdu sentences, arranged roughly by tense.

Before you use it in 2027

Grammar, tenses, voice, spelling, letters, stories and Urdu-to-English translation do not depend on the textbook, so those parts are still useful as they are. The lesson-based parts (translation paragraphs, short questions, word meanings and poems) only help if the same lessons are in your book. Open the current 9th class English textbook, check the table of contents, and skip any lesson or poem that is no longer there.

How to get the most out of it

  1. Cover the ticks with a strip of paper and attempt the MCQs in sets of 50. Mark the ones you got wrong and repeat only those the next day.
  2. Learn one model letter and one story really well, then practise changing the middle paragraph for different topics.
  3. Translate ten of the Urdu sentences every day and check the tense of each one before you write it.
  4. Practise one comprehension passage a day. Answer in full sentences, in your own words where you can.

To see how the board actually sets these questions, work through the 9th class English past papers as well.
