From reading sentences to reading passages
In Classes 2 and 3 children learn to read and write short English sentences. Class 4 asks for more: longer passages, comprehension questions, grammar points such as tenses and parts of speech, and short pieces of writing like a paragraph or a simple letter.
The biggest jump is in writing. Children are expected to put their own sentences together rather than copy them, so regular short writing practice makes a real difference.
Practising English at home
- Read the lesson twice. First for the story, then again to find new words and underline them.
- Write three sentences a day. About school, the weather or a favourite game. Short and regular beats long and rare.
- Use the grammar in speech. If the lesson is about the past tense, ask your child what they did yesterday and help them answer in English.
- Learn spellings in small groups. Five words a day, tested the next morning, stick better than a long list before the test.
Other Class 4 books
Class 4 in Punjab also uses Urdu, Maths, Islamiat, General Science, Social Studies and Akhlaqiat (Ethics). All of them are on the Class 4 Punjab textbooks page. The book before this one is Class 3 English, and the Class 5 Punjab textbooks come next.
