What makes Class 4 Maths different
Class 4 builds on the tables and four operations from Class 3 and uses them with larger numbers. Long multiplication and division take up more space, and new ideas such as fractions, measurement and simple geometry need a child to think, not just calculate.
A child who still counts on fingers for times tables will find this year slow. Making the tables automatic is the single most useful thing to work on.
Practising maths at home
- Tables, out of order. Ask mixed questions like 7 × 8 or 6 × 9 rather than reciting a table from the start.
- Fractions with real things. Cut a roti or an apple into halves and quarters so a fraction means something your child can see.
- Measure around the house. Use a ruler or measuring tape on books, tables and doors, and talk about centimetres and metres.
- Show the working. Long division goes wrong one step at a time; neat, step-by-step working makes mistakes easy to find.
