How Class 1 English builds on Pre-1
The Pre-1 English Primer introduces the alphabet and a first set of picture words. In Class 1 children use those letters to read and spell short words, learn the sounds letters make (phonics), and begin reading simple sentences. Units mix listening, speaking, reading and writing, with exercises after each one.
Two things usually need extra practice at this age: telling apart letters that look alike, such as b and d, and writing capital and small letters correctly on the lines.
Helping your child at home
- Say the sound, not just the name. “b” as in bat helps more with reading than “bee”.
- Point while reading. Ask your child to move a finger under each word as they read.
- Talk about the pictures. Asking “what is this?” in English builds speaking confidence.
- Use lined paper. Copying a few words from each lesson keeps handwriting in step with reading.
