Building number sense
Class 2 Maths builds on counting from Class 1. Children work with bigger numbers, learn place value (tens and ones), and get much more practice with addition and subtraction, including sums that need carrying and borrowing. Early ideas of measurement, time, money and shapes also appear.
Place value is the part to watch. A child who understands that 34 means three tens and four ones will find almost everything else in the book easier.
Practising maths at home
- Count real things in tens. Bundle sticks or straws in tens, then count bundles and loose ones to make numbers.
- Do sums out loud. Small daily questions while shopping or cooking build speed without feeling like homework.
- Read the clock together. Ask the time a few times a day once the clock chapter comes up.
- Check the working, not just the answer. Most mistakes at this age come from digits written in the wrong column.
Other Class 2 books
Class 2 in Punjab also uses Urdu, English, Islamiat, Akhlaqiat (Ethics) and General Knowledge. All of them are on the Class 2 Punjab textbooks page. The book before this one is Class 1 Maths, and the next is Class 3 Maths.
